The Pace of Self-Improvement
Lately I’ve been trying to take a slower, more thoughtful approach to any form of self-betterment. In the past, I would latch onto one specific “problem” with myself I felt I needed to solve — acne, posture, personal finances, gaining muscle, etc. — and then attack said problem full force, not stopping until I had “fixed” myself. Which I’m aware sounds absurd when it’s actually typed out, but It’s just so fun to solve problems and fix things! However, as I’m sure you can imagine, that approach has never really done me any good, something I’m just now admitting to myself.
These days, I’m trying to stop and consider “is this really worth my energy?” and “does this really need to get done RIGHT THIS VERY MOMENT?!” whenever I find myself starting to get sucked into the MUST FIX mindset. And maybe, just maybe, allowing myself to consider “are things actually pretty fine the way they are?”
It’s been a tough practice for sure. But so far it’s also led me to find some really great, caring professionals (both IRL and in book / internet form) who are teaching me a ton. Overall, I feel like I’m on a really great, healing path (which you better believe I need to repeat to myself whenever I’m feeling impatient… which is often).
A quick aside to note that while my writing here on the blog focuses mostly on the physical health/healing aspect of my life, I’d be remiss not to mention that this slower pace of self-improvement also involves looking at my mental and emotional health (the slowest of them all 😭😅)
Just in the past month or so I’ve read two awesome books: “Eat Yourself Healthy” by Dr. Megan Rossi, which talks all about gut health and the latest research. Especially interesting to me was reading the latest on the gut brain connection and how it’s related to digestive disorders like IBS. I also just finished “Beyond the Pill” (pictured above, you knew that was eventually going to become relevant haha) by Dr. Jolene Brighten, which talks all about hormone health. She specifically addresses it through the lens of the birth control pill, but also covers how your hormones work in your body and what can happen if something becomes unbalanced.
It was super cool to read these books back to back and make the connections between gut health and hormone health (for instance, people with IBS have an exaggerated response to hormones!) and learn about all the systems in the body that control each aspect. Highly recommend if you’re interested in either or both subjects!
The best part about learning all these new things, though, is knowing that I don’t have to implement any changes on my own. Over the past year, I’ve (slowly) built up a support system of health professionals who take an integrative approach (that is, they look at the person as a whole while still specializing in one aspect) and know this stuff waaaay better than me. They also remind me constantly that healing hormones or mental health takes time (and I constantly remind them that I’m impatient ha), but I know I can trust them to go at a pace and make decisions that are best for me.
